"I have never experienced a book club before, so my first experience was very enlightening. Racheal's outline was an excellent idea, and as we followed it, we were able to discuss not only the book, but our own ideas and experiences within our individual business'. I feel that I will be learning a lot from the book club, and I am looking forward to our next meeting!" Erin Perry, Chocolate Rose, www.chocolate-rose.com

Introducing the new
TIO BUSINESS BOOK CLUB

Place: TIO, 49 Daggett St., Moosup
Date and Time: May 27th, 2008, 7 PM

There is no cost for this meeting. Coffee will be served.

Success is hard to achieve in a vacuum! Every entrepreneurial giant has a mentor or two. Every single one credits networking. Every single one has found a way to do something new or simply much, much better. Success has to be a state of mind before it can become a physical reality. Exposure to new ideas and sharing those ideas with others provides invaluable strength and boosts resolve. A business owner can stay in business, at least for a time, without new mental input but that business will never achieve a high level of success. For that, its owners and managers have to stretch beyond that status-quo.

There are a few options available to business owners, and fewer yet to those of us in Northeast Connecticut. There's no school easily accessible for a weekend MBA program. Our local college tries but barely offers the most minimally basic services and input. There are online courses but they are often expensive and do not offer the kinds of give-and-take discussions so valuable to the learning experience. There are books but we know business owners have very little time to read. Now that those labor saving devices - you know, the computer, the cell phone, and the internet - exist, we're busier than ever.  Sure, we'd all love to settle down into our favorite chair with the latest page turner on business management but who has time?  Besides, that's a pretty solitary activity.

TIO has the perfect solution. The last Tuesday of each month, just once a month, we'll pick a highly rated business oriented book to read.  You'll find a link to the book right here.  These will all be the kind of books you need to keep on your shelf, the kind you need to read over and over again.  None of them will be expensive.  Buy it, look through it, and, preferably, read it.  Then we'll all get together.  A Book Report will be prepared and handed out to summarize the main points for those who didn't get a chance to finish it.  First we'll go over the Book Report then we'll have an open discussion about the major, and minor, topics and points covered. Participants will be able to share instances from their own experience and benefit from those of others.

The book for our May Business Book Club will be John Jantsch's Duct Tape Marketing: The World's Most Practical Small Business Marketing Guide

Duct Tape Marketing is not just a book. It's a brand! An Amazon search for marketing books turned up 354,370 books! It's hard for any one book to really cut through that kind of comeptition but this book has. According to Bo Burlingham, editor-at-large, Inc. magazine, and author, "I have never read a business book that is as packed with hands-on, actionable information as this one." Darrell Zahorsky from about.com says, "What the small business world doesn't need is another marketing book but what entreprenurs want is a simple, hands-on guide to marketing. John Jantsch's Duct Tape Marketing delivers just what the small business crowd ordered." We suggest that you also check out the website for a wealth of tools and additional information. We consider this book to be one of those solid basics that belong on every business owner's shelf.

Here are a few other excellent books which will most likely turn up as TIO Business Book Club choices in the future. If you have a book you'd like to suggest please email us.

Past BBC Choices

In some cases the books are available in CD or DVD as well. Feel free to use this search tool to see if there's an "easy listening" version of your book - or to find similar books, or other books by these authors. You should be able to highlight and copy the author's name then paste it into the search box below.
